Farmers and villagers of Bikaner are facing acute shortage of water in areas of village Sri Kolayat, Khajuwala, Pugal, Bajju etc. Sufficient water is not being supplied in canal, and people are forced to purchase water for drinking.
Recently farmers of Pugal area staged dharna on 620 Head area demanding water for drinking as well as for irrigation. Crops are getting waste due to non-availability of sufficient water for irrigation. Farmers are alleging that irrigation officials are deliberately releasing less water in the Pugal branch of canal, due to this water is not reaching upto tail end causing great loss to farmers of tail area.
Water tanks and diggis in Khajuwala area are just drying due to short supply of water. Moreover, the water as much being supplied in the area is quite polluted, and is not drink worthy. There are no arrangements from district administration to get it purified and made drink worthy. Though PHED and other departments are claiming that steps have been taken to ensure supply of pure and safe water, but practically nothing is happening. It may be mentioned here that earlier also farmers of the area agitated on the issue of water supply. Looking into the shortage of drinking water, people of the area are making their own arrangements for security of available water in tanks and diggis.
Villagers are afraid of coming months of May-June when summer will be on its heights and it would be more difficult for them to survive with such short supply of water, even for drinking.
